Rethink Mandatory Minimums

Judges are usually elected by the community and often have a history within the community that is invaluable and as such they should be allowed to consider sentencing most appropriate for the situation. Mandatory minimums establish nothing other than an arbitrary penalty for an offender and judges should have a menu of options for sentences that include rehabilitation, restitution, community service, or other reasonable action based on community needs, the crime, or the individual. Our goal should be to rehabilitate felons and reduce recidivism.
